What cardio exercise can I do while my ankle is healing from surgery?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

I had 2 screws put in my ankle after it broke and I haven’t been able to run. What alternative cardio exercise can I do to keep active?

Water aerobics, rowing (real or row machine), cycling (spin machine probably safer in your condition), sex (thought I’d throw that one in there), hula hoops (just lean to one side).

Broken ankle surgery (ORIF) a year ago, I still have pain, is there any relief (details in Q)?

Friday, January 29th, 2010

I had 7 screws and a plate put in my ankle 11 months ago after a fall while running. I feel pain at every second of the day. I’ve trained and continue to run 5 miles 5 days a week. My question is, for those who had the same surgery, have you felt relief? How? Or has anyone had the titanium taken out and felt relief?
Thank you for your help!

Jenn, try this website, someone on there will have the same injury as you. I found that group really helpful when my son broke his femur

Can anyone help me about what to expect from ankle surgery?

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

I just recently broke my ankle. The doctor said I need surgery I will be needing screws and a plate. Can anyone give me some input about what Im about to go through. THanks.

Well it sucks. You barely touch something with your foot without pain killer and it’s super painful for 3 months , sometimes a little more. Take msm , drink milk.
The most important thing however is to keep off it, and watch this video it may help;

After ankle surgery how long will the pain last?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

I broke two bones in my ankle and had ORF surgery with plates and screws. Broke the ankle on 4th June, had surgery on 12th June, Cast off on 4th August. A lot of the problems with flexibility etc are ok now. But I can’t walk/stand for more than around 15 minutes without it aching badly and swelling which means I can’t do anything for very long at all without sitting down. Any ideas how long this stage will last? It doesnt seem to be improving really.
Thankyou

It’s hard to say recovery for some surgeries like that can be about 6 months or so, but in your particular situation it’s hard to say how long it could be. I would suggest talking with your surgeon and physical therapy about this (if you are not in physical therapy, that would be one of the best things for rehabilitation to your leg).

Can I still get into the military if my ankle requires surgery?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I hurt my ankle jogging, and it requires surgery to repair the damage. If I go ahead with the procedure, would I be able to join the Army or Navy after it heals?

Depends on the procedure. You will need a waiver if you get pins or screws or anything like that. Remember that waivers are hard to get right now but not impossible. The pins, plates, screws have to not get in a way of doing any physical activity. As long as you have full range of motion I’d say you’ll be alright.

Good luck.

My Foot After Ankle Plate/Removal Surgery

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

This is my ankle the morning after I had surgery to remove a four inch plate and three screws from my right ankle. I originally had them put in February fifth. I broke my ankle January 30th of this year. The surgery wasn’t that bad. If anyone has questions about revovery time or anything, just comment and let me know. There aren’t enough videos of things like this on Youtube, and I know that when you have a broken ankle/are waiting to go into surgery, you end up looking around for stuff…

Ankle surgery in cast, blood rush to foot causing pain, advice?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

My boyfriend had ankle surgery a little over a week ago and is now in a cast. He had a metal plate and 6 screws put in. He keeps his leg elevated above his heart when he sleeps, but elevated level with his waist when he sits.
When he stands, the blood rushes to his feet causing them to swell and causes a lot of pain.
Are there any tips that will help alleviate or reduce this? How long will this continue to happen?

Any advice anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated!

my mom had the something done in august and she still suffers. she was in so much pain. no matter what you do it will always stay swollen. She had ice on it continuously with may ice packs. But DO get therapy or he will have problems and possibly walk with a limp. She now walks with a cane. she has the option to get the screws taken out but she is not going to because of the continuous pain. she has a therapist she goes to and he helps her so much that she only uses her cane sometimes. she now has arthritis and he told her if she would have started sooner he could have avoided getting arthritis. I feel so bad for him, tell him i am so so sorry that that has happened. If you need more advice, please let me know!!! email if you need to……..

Broken ankle surgery, when does it finally feel better?

Monday, October 19th, 2009

I had an open reduction internal fixation of my right ankle after breaking it. Seven crews and a plate were put in, It’s been 5 months and I still feel pain every day. My doctor says evewryone’s different. Anyone have this surgery and when did the pain go away?

I broke my ankle and had to have my bones relocated and fixed toegther. But i was to young (about 15) so they wouldnt put screws in as my bones were still growing. but they did put some sort of wires in i think, to hold the bones together. Errrm, it hurt for about 2 weeks while it was swolen in the cast. Then when the cast was off after 6 weeks it hurt to walk and i couldnt walk properly for about 4 weeks. Hmmm, thats about 3 months innit. Maybe you should tell your doctor you really think something is wrong.

Edit: After reading the 2 answers below me, I would like to add that what happened to me, is i completely dislocated my ankle and broke it clean through in 2 places. I did it skateboarding, the doctor said i should never skate again, and not do any sort of strenuous exercises with it for about a year or 2… I started skating about 6 months later and still am to this day, age 19. Dont give up hope!!!!

How long is the norm to wear a cast after broken ankle surgery?

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

I broke my ankle three weeks ago. I am doing remarkably well, (that’s my own prognosis). I have a cast on, and on crutches, but I can put weight on my foot without pain. I am totally pain free. I had a plate and several screws put in. I went back to doctor one week post-op, and the x-rays showed I was doing very well. My body has always healed extremely fast from surgeries, so I’m wondering if a walking cast or perhaps a boot would be possible after only three weeks post-op. I have an appointment with the doc in three days, but I would like to hear from anyone with a similar situation and how quickly their recovery went. Thanks for any input.

That’s really up to your surgeon to decide. On average, you are supposed to be in a cast for about 6 weeks. Why 6 weeks? It’s about the time where the bones soildify enough for you to start putting weight on it. Even if at 3 weeks, it looks good, you never want to put weight on it too early even with plates and screws. You’d be surprised how people can break through screws and plates if you go too fast too soon. I understand your eagerness to get going, but the truth is – better to be safe than sorry. After 6 weeks, you’ll likely be put in a boot and sent to PT for rehab to get the ankle moving again.
