What is the difference between a sprain and a broken ankle?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

We think my brother broke his ankle but just want to be sure before we go to the ER because he doesnt have health insurance. It is very swollen, ecspecialy on the outer part of the ankle. He cannot put weight on it, he cannot turn in without severe pain and his toes are slightly numb. He can wiggle his toes a very little. Do you think this is a fracture or a sprain? Thanks.
He hurt his ankle playing basketball.
Well we went to the ER last night and he did fracture his ankle.

A severe sprain can have some of the same identical pain that a fracture may have. Its just impossible to tell without an xray. Better go just in case.

Broken ankle surgery (ORIF) a year ago, I still have pain, is there any relief (details in Q)?

Friday, January 29th, 2010

I had 7 screws and a plate put in my ankle 11 months ago after a fall while running. I feel pain at every second of the day. I’ve trained and continue to run 5 miles 5 days a week. My question is, for those who had the same surgery, have you felt relief? How? Or has anyone had the titanium taken out and felt relief?
Thank you for your help!

Jenn, try this website, someone on there will have the same injury as you. I found that group really helpful when my son broke his femur

I have an incomplete fracture to one of the bones (not sure which one surprisingly) in my ankle. How long does it exactly take to really heal?

I having and ankle surgery and im really scared because it take 10s hours?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

i have broken my ankle 6 times in the last couple of years and now im having a 10 hour ankle surgery and a knee replacement and im really scared!

it’s normal to be scared of any kind of surgery. that’s a long surgery but if it’s needed it’s better to get it out of the way now than to wait and let it get worse. surgery will go fast. you may feel like you lost a day because of the medication they use to keep you asleep but you will be ok. you will have your friends there when you wake up. just express to them that you really would feel comfortable if at least someone stayed at the hospital in case the doctors need someone to relay information too…

hope that helps a little…be strong!!!

Broken ankle surgery, when does it finally feel better?

Monday, October 19th, 2009

I had an open reduction internal fixation of my right ankle after breaking it. Seven crews and a plate were put in, It’s been 5 months and I still feel pain every day. My doctor says evewryone’s different. Anyone have this surgery and when did the pain go away?

I broke my ankle and had to have my bones relocated and fixed toegther. But i was to young (about 15) so they wouldnt put screws in as my bones were still growing. but they did put some sort of wires in i think, to hold the bones together. Errrm, it hurt for about 2 weeks while it was swolen in the cast. Then when the cast was off after 6 weeks it hurt to walk and i couldnt walk properly for about 4 weeks. Hmmm, thats about 3 months innit. Maybe you should tell your doctor you really think something is wrong.

Edit: After reading the 2 answers below me, I would like to add that what happened to me, is i completely dislocated my ankle and broke it clean through in 2 places. I did it skateboarding, the doctor said i should never skate again, and not do any sort of strenuous exercises with it for about a year or 2… I started skating about 6 months later and still am to this day, age 19. Dont give up hope!!!!

How long is the norm to wear a cast after broken ankle surgery?

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

I broke my ankle three weeks ago. I am doing remarkably well, (that’s my own prognosis). I have a cast on, and on crutches, but I can put weight on my foot without pain. I am totally pain free. I had a plate and several screws put in. I went back to doctor one week post-op, and the x-rays showed I was doing very well. My body has always healed extremely fast from surgeries, so I’m wondering if a walking cast or perhaps a boot would be possible after only three weeks post-op. I have an appointment with the doc in three days, but I would like to hear from anyone with a similar situation and how quickly their recovery went. Thanks for any input.

That’s really up to your surgeon to decide. On average, you are supposed to be in a cast for about 6 weeks. Why 6 weeks? It’s about the time where the bones soildify enough for you to start putting weight on it. Even if at 3 weeks, it looks good, you never want to put weight on it too early even with plates and screws. You’d be surprised how people can break through screws and plates if you go too fast too soon. I understand your eagerness to get going, but the truth is – better to be safe than sorry. After 6 weeks, you’ll likely be put in a boot and sent to PT for rehab to get the ankle moving again.

Is it better to break your ankle or sprain your ankle?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

I once had a really bad ankle sprain when I was playing in the NBA. I went up for the shot and landed badly on my left ankle. At the ER, the doctors told me it wasn’t broken. Since then, my ankle just hasn’t been the same. Would it have been better if I’d broken my ankle instead? That way, the bones would just heal, rather than screwing up my ligaments and tendons.

It depends. If you were on the Minnesota Timberwolves, it would be better to sprain your ankle. You’d have to go to a vet for therapy, and usually their nurses are hotter.
